Daniel’s Seventieth Seven

[Daniel 9:24-27]  Daniel’s Seventieth Seven

Daniel’s 70th seven represents seven years divided equally into two parts.  The first 3 ½ years belongs to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ from the time he was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist until he was crucified on Passover 32 AD.  The last 3 ½ years marks the great tribulation at the end of this age and is described in the Revelation of Jesus Christ.  The 70th seven is split leaving the middle which encompass all the years between 32 AD until the onset of the great tribulation.  Daniel verses 9:26 and 9:27 describe these three parts: the first 3 ½ years, the middle, and the last 3 ½ years.  The vision is repeated twice because the matter has been firmly decided by God (Ge 41:32).

Da 9:24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people [Israel] and your holy city [Jerusalem] to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy [Jesus Christ].

Da 9:25 “Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree [Cyrus] to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One [Jesus Christ], the ruler [King], comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.

Da 9:26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One [Jesus Christ] will be cut off  [crucified] and will have nothing. The people [Roman Empire] of the ruler [king] who will come [future antichrist] will destroy the city [Jerusalem] and the sanctuary [Temple]. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

Da 9:27 He  [Jesus Christ] will confirm a [New] covenant with many [church] for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’  he [Titus] will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing  of the temple  he [Mohammed] will set up an abomination  [Dome of the Rock] that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him [future antichrist]. ’”

The decree of Cyrus was issued in the first year of Darius when Daniel received the seventy sevens vision. This decree released the Israelites from captivity in Babylon and allowed them to return to their homeland in Judah and Jerusalem.  The starting point of the decree immediately followed the 70 years of desolation that Jeremiah prophesied.  The 69 sevens end with the beginning of the ministry of Jesus Christ when he was revealed to Israel by John the Baptist.

 Pairing Structure

  • MENE,MENE  (Da 5:25)

  • Decree of Cyrus (Ezr 6:3), Decree of Darius (Ezr 6:11-12)

  • Three pairings in one verse Da 9:24

  • Two ‘rulers’ are mentioned; one is Jesus (Da 9:25) and the other is the Beast (Da 9:26)

  • Split structure of the seventieth seven years is divided equally as 3 ½ years

First 3 ½ Years

  • Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his ministry (Lk 3:23)

  • Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist who was the last Old Testament prophet (Jn 1:29 – 34, Dan 9:24-25)

  • Jesus was anointed by the Spirit of the Lord fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah (Lk 4:17-21, Is 61:1-2, Ac  10:36-38)

  • The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ lasted 3 ½ years

  • Jesus established a New Covenant (Mt 26:7, Mk 14:24,Lk 22:20, 1 Cor 11:23-26)

  • After 3 ½ years Jesus the Anointed One was “cut off” or crucified (Dan 9:26) however this sorrowful event also became the basis of the New Covenant (Dan 9:27) for all who believe.

  • 32 AD – Jesus gave the Holy Spirit on Pentecost at Jerusalem confirming the covenant he had made (Dan 9:27, Jn 3:16, Jn 16:7-15,Ac 2:1-4,17).  The New Covenant and the Holy Spirit build up the church for one seven until the end of the age (Dan 9:27).  The gospel message was confirmed (Mk 16:20, Ac 14:3,1Co 1:6, He 2:3) to believers by signs and wonders.

  • 70 AD – Jerusalem was destroyed and the Temple were burned by the Roman army (Mt 24:1-2, Mt 24:15, Lk 21:20-24, Dan 9:26) which resulted in an end to sacrifice and offering (Dan 9:27).  The Jewish people revolted and over a million were killed throughout Judea. This period marked the First Roman-Jewish War of 66-73.

  • 95 AD – The Revelation of Jesus Christ, penned by the Apostle John, completed the final book of Holy Scripture.  Jesus solemnly warned not to change His Word (Rev 22:18-19).

  • 692 AD –  For the past 1300 years an abomination also known as Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock stands on the wing of the temple (Dan 9:27).  This is a possible precursor to the man Beast of Revelation.

  • 1933-45 AD – Adolf Hitler tried to conquer the world. He was stopped short of killing every living Jew only because he lost WWII.  Under Hitler’s dictatorship nearly two-thirds of all Jews living in Europe were gruesomely murdered by the Nazi regime.   In all roughly six million Jewish men, women, and children were killed by this antichrist.

  • 1948 AD – Israel re-established as a sovereign state among the nations of the world.

 Last 3 ½ Years

  • Tribulation confirmed as 3 ½ years (Dan 7:25,9:27,12:7, Rev 11:3,12:6,13:5)

  • Antichrist rules over the entire earth as Beast during this time (Dan 7:23-25, 2Th 2:1-12, Rev 13:5-7)

  • Christians greatly persecuted  by the Beast (Rev 6:9-11, 7:16, 12:17, 13:7-10, 13:15-17, 14:9-13, 16:6,20:4)

  • Sixth Seal Rapture (Rev 6:12-7:17, Mt 24:29-31, Lk 21:36) of the church – a great multitude from every nation are found standing before the throne of God and Jesus the Lamb of God, they have come out of the great tribulation (Rev 7:13-14) whether through martyrdom or rapture

  • Israel is preserved  throughout the tribulation (Rev 7:1-8, Rev 11:3, Rev 12:6, Rev 12:14)

  • Israel redeemed from the earth after the 7 trumpet blasts have sounded  (Rev 14:1-6)

  • Jesus returns to the earth in glory as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Matt 24:27, Rev 19:11-21)

  1. I’ve been looking into the idea that the first half of the seven years has already occurred, so I found your post interesting. But do you see another temple being built in the future for the antichrist to occupy (2 Thessalonians 2:4)? Paul saw the abomination in the temple as occurring in association with the second coming.
It seems to me that the “he” who confirms the covenant for one week (Daniel 9:27) is the same “he” who puts an end to sacrifice and offering and who sets up the abomination, the abomination which undoubtedly was to come after Jesus’ time on earth (Matthew 24:15). I don’t see how you can impose different names for the “he” here. It seems much more logical that it’s the same character spoken of from the “ruler who will come” to the end of the chapter.

    • Why would GOD direct the construction of a third Temple in his name after the Spirit has already moved outside the second Temple?

Mt 27:50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Mt 27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split

Surely no structure built on the Temple Mount by the hands of men will be for the Father’s glory. The exact location of the Second Temple of the LORD structure is well known and will surely be used by the Beast so as to misuse and defame the City that bears the Name of the LORD. I’m proposing that such a structure is already in place and known as the Dome of the Rock.

As for the idea that the first 3 1/2 years of Daniel’s Seventieth Seven belong to the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ beginning with John the Baptist I have no doubt.

      • Yes, of course there is no more need for sacrifice for sin. But that doesn’t stop the unbelieving Jews practicing their religion, as the Holy Spirit could foresee, and some of them are wanting to make sacrifices even now. Paul spoke of antichrist entering the temple in association with the second coming. However, I agree that perhaps AC will be going into the Muslim structure on the temple mount. This would fit with the West’s general move towards acceptance of Islam.
