Is the U.S.A. Babylon the Great?

This article explores the possibility that the U.S.A. has assumed the title ” Babylon the Great” mentioned in Revelation.

Rev 18:3 For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”

These adulteries seem to involve the entire economic and political system in regard to how goods and services are produced, traded, taxed, and consumed.  This involves all levels of government, financial institutions, stock markets, and the use of fiat currency as a global reserve.  This system is intertwined to principles of capitalism which has created a vast growing underclass, a shrinking middle-class, and an increasingly wealthy and highly influential ruling class.

The U.S.A. is a country rich almost beyond measure having the largest GDP of any country in the world.  She is rich in natural resources such as water, coal, natural gas, oil, timber, and other raw materials.  She is also the top agricultural exporter in the world.  She is the most innovative country in the world by registered patents.  Centers of innovation from Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley have founded new technologies which have propelled the entire globe into an interconnected information age.  Huge seaports on three coastal waters (Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico) deliver cargoes originating throughout the earth.  A federally supervised network of interstate freeways, rail, and air travel allow the imported merchandise to be delivered quickly anywhere within the empire.

Excessive luxuries – The U.S.A. is number two in annual household expenditures per capita (U.A.E. is number one).  Advertising and other marketing methods have created a desire among the people to constantly acquire new things from an endless menu of assorted products.  Because new goods and services can be bought with credit most people are enabled to purchase far more merchandise than they can actually afford.  Living beyond ones means has become a way of life for those living in Babylon and the rest of the world is catching on to this principleMountains of trash and waste are the byproduct of this unsustainable lifestyle and the earth is groaning in response.  Yet the merchants of the earth who have figured out how to scale their global operations to match demand have also become rich almost beyond measure.  There are about 1426 billionaires in the world or about 1 billionaire per every 5 million people.  There are also about 12 million millionaires in the world or about 1 millionaire per every 600 people.  The lure of Babylon is that it is possible for anyone to become a millionaire or perhaps even a billionaire.

Rev 18:7 Give her as much torture and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow, and I will never mourn.’

The LORD is singling out the proud harlot city of Babylon for judgment.

Rev 18:10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: “ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city,O Babylon, city of power! In one hour your doom has come!’

City of power – In our time Washington D.C. is the most powerful city on earth.  Her annual operating budget is about 3.7 trillion dollars and she spends it on whatever she pleases.  She has built and sustained the worlds most powerful military (land, sea, air, and space) to protect her vital interests around the globe.  She maintains and directs her power from enormous institutions she has built such as the ATF, CIA, FBI, FRB, NSA, and the Pentagon.  She bears strong resemblance to the ancient city of Rome in likeness to centralized government: Congress, Senate, Presidency, and Supreme Court.

Rev 18:11 “The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes any more—
Rev 18:12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;
Rev 18:13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and bodies and souls of men.
Rev 18:14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your riches and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’
Rev 18:15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn
Rev 18:16 and cry out: “ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!
Rev 18:17 In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’ “Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.
Rev 18:18 When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city ?’
Rev 18:19 They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: “ ‘Woe! Woe, O great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin

Babylon the great harlot city and her way of life that sought everything except the LORD will one day be thrown down never to rise again.

If our LORD is coming soon then the LORD will certainly target the most powerful city on earth for divine judgment because the governing majority in that city have abandoned the Bible as the Word of God; they have despised the LORD who is the sovereign Creator of heaven and earth; and they have ignored the gospel of Jesus Christ which is the singular hope for mankind.

There remain only a few missing events to complete this Revelation prophecy:

  1. The sudden emergence of a political ruler  (sea beast) accompanied by signs and wonders and heralded as the world’s false savior by the news media.   This can happen suddenly.
  2. Consolidation of the entire world under the rule of the beast as a 10 nation confederacy (the 10 horns).  This also can happen suddenly.
  3. Intense persecution of Christians and Jews during the entire 42 month reign of antichrist.  Multitudes of Christians from every nation will refuse to worship the beast and also refuse to accept the mark (666) of the beast upon their hand or forehead.

One Response to “Is the U.S.A. Babylon the Great?”

  1. Very interesting indeed, thanks. I’ve pondered this possibility myself, and I think I may have one or two more lines of reasoning to support the concept. I’ll try to gather my thoughts on the subject and share them with you in a week or so.
